The paper discusses the features of the development of historical knowledge in Russia in the context of their subjectivity/objectivity, their importance in the process of interaction between society and government is shown. The methods of dialectics, historicism, analysis, systemic and others were used. It is noted that historical knowledge in Russia, in contrast to knowledge in other humanitarian scientific fields, is directly woven into the current life of Russian society, determining behavioral attitudes for many citizens. This circumstance is used by the authorities to achieve their goals, and not always in the public interest. In particular, the rejection by the Soviet government of the positive achievements of the Russian Empire and the imposition of this historical position on the Soviet people negatively affected their historical consciousness. As a result, there is a high level of politicization of discussions about the history of Russia both among the population and professional historians, despite the expansion of the possibilities of scientific research, allowing the use of a significantly larger volume of historical documents. The work gives an explanation of this phenomenon.
