The article examines the historical stages of the formation of national identity in Russia, which are formed as a result of information impact and cultural actualization and generate various identification matrices for individuals who make up such communities as a nation and civilization. Domestic social thought is distinguished by an unusually strong cultural and historical dominant, which is characterized by the need for self-identification, comprehending the place of Russia in world history, revealing and deep understanding of its individual essence and originality. In this context, it seems relevant to turn to the Russian discourse of national identity, to the philosophical traditions of understanding the "national idea" of Russia. This appeal is of significant importance from the point of view of studying the process of self-identification in the Russian public consciousness, since acute social crises play a special role in the self-identification of society. Accompanied by a change in the existing system of traditions and values, they, at the same time, highlight the hidden potential of culture, make it necessary to revise the traditional established ideas about their nation and its place among other nations.
