The Olympic movement is a part of sports diplomacy and modern international relations. Initially held for Europe and America, sports games of this level eventually turned into a global treasure. The beginning of Olympism in Asia was laid by Japan, which has now become a country that has organized four Olympic Games. The Tokyo Olympics, originally scheduled for 1940, were cancelled due to World War II. However, the Games returned to Tokyo in 1964. This event marked a pivotal moment in Japan’s history, as the country used the occasion to initiate a new peaceful policy in the region. This approach was in alignment with Japan’s renewed identity as a rapidly developing economy, seeking to reestablish itself in the international arena as a peaceful and progressive nation. The Winter Olympics held in Sapporo in 1972 and Nagano in 1998 did not attract significant international attention compared to other Olympic Games. Nonetheless, these events contributed to enhancing Japan’s image as a capable host of major international sporting events. They also facilitated the development of infrastructure and sports facilities within the region. The 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo were crucial for Japan in terms of reasserting its position in the Asia-Pacific region amidst the rising influence of China and Korea. However, the COVID-19 pandemic impeded the full realization of the potential of these Games. Despite these challenges, Japan’s ability to host the Olympics under such unprecedented conditions demonstrated its capacity to manage crises and maintain international cooperation. In conclusion, Japan’s potential in sports diplomacy remains far from exhausted. The country continues to use the Olympics as a platform to showcase its cultural and economic strength, as well as to strengthen international ties. Japan has repeatedly demonstrated its ability to leverage the Olympics to advance its national interests and enhance its international image.
