In the article based on the analysis of domestic and foreign literature examines the historical experience of the Russian state in strengthening of the discipline in the Russian army in the XVIII — the beginning of XX century. Special attention is paid to the theoretical, organizational and legal bases of high discipline formation among military men. The author pays attention to disciplinary and punitive activity of governmental and military authorities of the Russian state in the process of establishing law and order in the armed forces. The author touches upon the role and place of the "mechanical discipline”, the internal order, and drilling to ensure discipline and order in Russian military units. He also focuses on moral factor analysis, moral and psychological training of officers and lower ranks to strengthen military discipline.
