Rural history nowadays falls within the scope of interests of scientists of various fields of scientific knowledge. This is because of attention increased in the last decade, firstly, to the periphery as a whole, and, secondly, because new opportunities for development opened up for a researcher. It is expressed in the development of new methodological practices and introduction of new sources of information in the scientific use. New historical sources allow to look at the events and processes from another point of view. Studying the history of vanished villages of Kolosovka district of Omsk region in line with rural history requires an analysis of a broad source base, including different types of sources. Its foundation is traditionally consisted of written sources, due to their prevalence, availability, and developed methodology of application. Written sources can be represented by the following types: legislative acts, record keeping documentation, statistical materials, periodicals. One of the main weaknesses of the written sources is that they reflect, above all, the interests of the state and its policy. This is compensated by the use of sources of nontraditional historical science. Such sources include photos, cartographic materials, collections of oral history. The most significant, in our view, are materials of oral history (memories). They allow see the processes on the part of the participant and not from the standpoint of the gov- ernment. However, materials of oral history represent pretty judgmental source, as they reflect psychological component of a human, its spiritual experiences and inner world. This explains some caution on the part of researchers in relation to this group of sources. But only a comprehensive analysis of the source base will provide comprehensively study of the history of vanished villag- es of Kolosovka district of Omsk region, in order to reveal the features of this type of settlements, and to identify the causes of their disappearance.
