The article studies the development of radio broadcasting in the Republic of Buryatia in 1920s - early 1940s. We have reconstructed the events based on the archival documents from the collection of the State Archive of the Republic of Buryatia. Unfortunately, there is a gap in the collections of documents that does not allow talking about radio broadcasting during the war years, so the upper boundary of the research was 1942. It is concluded that the development of radio in Buryatia was driven by the Soviet history in accordance with the goals and objectives of Soviet construction. The specificity of radio broadcasting was determined by its greatest accessibility to a wide audience of listeners, it was especially important in the conditions of mass illiteracy of the population. Radio became the fastest way to replicate the written word, the only source for delivering operational information to remote regions of the republic. The mass coverage of the population contributed to the transformation of radio into an ideological and propaganda tool of the Soviet state. The material and technical base of the radio, convenient broadcasting network, genre and thematic diversity had been developed shortly after the beginning of the activity of radio in Buryatia.
