In this scientific work, the history of the formation of one of the forms of production in criminal proceedings is considered. As a result, it was revealed: firstly, the first model similar to a modern trial with the participation of jurors was discovered in Russian Pravda; secondly, the requirements for candidates for jurors in the times of the Russian Empire were excessively overstated to meet the needs of the upper strata of the population, thirdly, the historical prerequisites for the formation of the institution of jury trial were revealed, and fourthly, the expansion of the list of criminal compositions by the legislator was analyzed. As a result of the study, the authors revealed that the jury trial appeared in Ancient Russia, and subsequently received a more detailed disclosure in the judicial reform in 1864. After the October Revolution of 1917 and until 1990, the institute temporarily ceased to exist. Since April 26, 1990, at the moment when the USSR Law "On the delimitation of powers between the USSR and the subjects of the Federation" was adopted, it reappeared in our country.
