The article provides a historical and legal study of the evolution of legislation in the field of wages in Russia over a significant chronological period - from the end of the XVIII to the middle of the twentieth century. The key stages of the formation of legal norms governing labor relations, wages and employee guarantees are analyzed. Special attention is paid to the transformation of the state's approaches to the legal regulation of wages - from the origin of the first factory laws in the Russian Empire to the formation and development of a complex system of Soviet labor law in the 1920s and beyond.
