This work presents a historical-legal analysis of the formation and development of domestic legislation governing preemptive civil rights. The article outlines the stages of transformation in the understanding and legal formalization of advantages and priorities in the sphere of civil legal relations throughout history, from the pre-state era to the Soviet period. It examines the key stages in the formation of legislation, from customary law and the first written sources of Ancient Rus’ (Russkaya Pravda, Pskov Judicial Charter) to the codified acts of the Russian Empire and Soviet power (Sobornoye Ulozheniye, Code of Laws, Civil Codes of the RSFSR). Particular attention is paid to the institution of joint ownership as the main area of application of preferential rights, as well as the analysis of the evolution of terminology and legal norms establishing the right of first refusal.
