The article analyzes difficulties and contradictions the repressed peoples of the Balkars, Karachays, Chechens and Ingushes faced as they were regaining their autonomies in the North Caucusus. Particular attention is paid to the administrative-territorial reforms in 1956-1957. The authors examine how social and economic problems of the rehabilitated peoples were tackled by the Communist Party and Soviet state officials. One of the consequences of autonomous recovery of the repressed peoples was the aggravation of interethnic relations in the North Caucasus.
