Severe combined immunodeficiency is a congenital disorder characterized by a dysfunction of the immune system. Lifetime diagnosis of the disease is problematic due to to the lack of a suitable screening test. A platelet, known to be a unique blood cell in terms of its structure and functions, is involved in the inflammatory and immunological reactions. The article presents the data on changes in the number of platelets and platelet indices (mean platelet volume, platelet distribution width, and thrombocrit) in newborns with severe combined immunodeficiency and provides the analysis of the development of stable thrombocytopenia refractory to medical therapy.
