Amendments to the code of professional ethics of a lawyer in Russia - 2025: rejection of European values and final submission to the dictates of the state

The article analyzes the amendments proposed by the Federal Chamber of Lawyers in 2025 to the Lawyer’s Code of Professional Ethics. It is concluded that the proposed changes are aimed at strengthening control over lawyers by the Chambers of advocates and the state. They dilute international standards of professional ethics, create new mechanisms of pressure on lawyers and increase the risk of arbitrary deprivation of their status. These changes contradict international standards for the independence of the legal profession and may negatively affect the quality and accessibility of legal aid in Russia.
