Investigation of biological properties of antibiotic-resistant Staphylococcus epidermidis 33 and its sensitivity to warnerin

Dynamics of resistance establishment in Staphylococcus epidermidis GISK 33 was revealed against bactericidal antibiotics ciprofloxacin and vancomycin. There were determined the lipid composition alterations in cell membranes of bacteria resistant to these antibiotics. In addition, significant increase of positively charged groups on the surface of vancomycin-resistant staphylococcal strain was observed. The antibacterial effects of low-molecular weight cationic peptide warnerin were demonstrated, as well as their synergy with lysozyme under the action on cells of S. epidermidis 33 and its antibiotic-resistant variants.
