The article substantiates the relevance and significance of the chosen topic and provides the research methodology. During the consideration of the area of research, scientific sources and articles by authors working on this topic such as F. A. Kudryavtsev, B. Ts. Zhalsanova, L. M. Dameshek, L. V. Kuras, I. N. Shagdurova, A. A. Borisov and others were analyzed. As a result of the work done, the process of organizing local self-government among the Buryats in the 19th and early 20th centuries was studied, problems and ways to solve them were considered. The study is considering the structure of Buryat local government bodies and identifies the features of their functioning during the period under review. The positive and negative aspects of the reforms carried out by the government of the Russian Empire in the sphere of managing Siberian foreigners are substantiated using the example of the Buryats. The causes and consequences of the liquidation of local government bodies among the Buryat people are analyzed.
