Electrodeposition of electrocoats is initiated by the electrolysis of water. The increasing H+ and OH concentration at the electrodes change the pH and neutralize the colloidally dispersed paint particles. The paint particles then coagulate and precipitate at the electrode surface. The paint layer gets tightly packed and insulates the electrode. This insulation causes the electrolysis of water to stop, no or very low amounts of ions (H+ or OH- , depending on the electrode) are produced and therefore no further particles are precipitated, thus stopping the coating process.
