The article provides information about V. K. Makarov's discoveries in the field of graphics and painting. The attribution of the works of M. M. Ivanov and J. K. Miville from the collection of the Russian Museum has become an important contribution to Russian art criticism, as well as the description of the techniques of work on the etching of I. I. Shishkin. The material is collected on the basis of written sources from the scientific archive of the State Russian Museum, most of which have not been published. The material of the article reflects a comprehensive scientific approach, which was characteristic of the time of V. K. Makarov's activity in the museum. He, like many other museum staff, was engaged in administrative, scientific, journalistic, educational activities, showed his knowledge in creating an exhibition after the collection returned from evacuation, and sought new opportunities to display the collection of the pre-Petrine era and studied classical academic art, studied Lomonosov mosaics, attributed works by artists of the XVIII–XIX centuries.
