The paper agrues that the standard notion of linguistic analysis as the analysis of natural language is misleading. Viewing language as a code used for the exchange of information invariably results in traditional linguistic analysis being an analysis of things – written words, sentences, and texts, all of which are cultural artifacts and do not belong to the realm of natural language as species-specific social behavior with a biological function of orienting others and self in their cognitive domain of interactions. Until the code model of language is forsaken, linguistic analysis will continue to dance attendance on the language myth, keeping linguistics in a state of permanent crisis.
