Teaching English is a relatively young area of pedagogy. In earlier years, pedagogical teaching models were borrowed from the foreign language teaching and were mostly based on views on the language taken from structural linguistics. With the transition to communicative approaches and methods of teaching a language through its content, views on language pedagogy also have changed. The sociocultural approach does not replace them and does not prohibit certain texts or actions for teaching and learning the language. This work is presented as an introduction to the study of the sociocultural dimension in teaching English, as a specific view of language and a concomitant approach to classrooms as a space conducive to language learning and literacy, which is important for structuring the learning environment and activities, as well as for the roles participants play in the educational process.
