This article examines the state of languages of indigenous people o f the North in the rural village of Khanty-Mansi Area with the compact settlement of the Khanty, Mansi and Nenets. The author’s field materials involving the traditional sociolinguistic methods are used in the article. The historical processes of joining Siberia to the Russian state, which began in the second half of the XVI th century, as well as active industrial development in the XX th century led to the formation of the permanent Russian population in the North-Western part of the country. Russian immigrants have had a significant impact on the language and culture of indigenous peoples. Ostyaks of Shapsha’s yurtas were one of the first in the area between the Ob and Irtysh who came into contact with the natives of Cisural area and the Russian North; as a result they were subjected to Russian assimilation before the other tribesmen and that led to language shift with the loss of ethnic languages ’ possession.
