The article deals with some key problems of language proficiency of scientific and pedagogical staff (post-graduate students) at agricultural universities in accordance with different training programs and modern educational trends. We consider some problems of developing educational programs for the course of foreign language. The study of the discipline is focused on mastering universal and professional competences by post-graduate students. The syllabus takes into account the already learned aspects of the foreign language (vocabulary, grammar, reading, speaking etiquette, writing), as well as the peculiarities of translating scientific texts to improve practical language skills and use the foreign language in scientific research. An important feature of the discipline «The Foreign Language» is its communicative orientation. Control of post-graduates' knowledge has the form of current and intermediate assessment.
