Blood transfusion effectiveness: management is more important than physiology

There are controversial data about age of transfused blood influence on short-term mortality. It is interesting to check if the regularity works in our multisectoral clinic. Methods. We compared age of red blood cells transfused to patients with different outcomes in multisectoral hospital in 2008 year. 818 patients received 2085 red blood cells (RBC) units. 63 recipients have died in hospital. 335 RBC units have been transfused for these patients. 755 survival recipients received 1750 RBC units. Results. Duration of storage for RBCs transfused to parients with bad outcome is at 11,1% less than one in group of survival patients (t=3,43; p2=7,66; p=0,0056).
