Ekphrasis in W.Pater's essay "Sandro Botticelli" and D.G.Rossetti's sonnet "For spring, by Sandro Botticelli"

The essay of an English writer W.Pater and the sonnet of an English poet D.G.Rossetti are considered in the context of ekphrasis poetics. Genre and stylistic peculiarities of the essay and the sonnet are revealed, authors' individual creative methods in the aspect of arts interaction are juxtaposed. Dealing with ekphrasis of Botticelli's picture "Venus' birth", the author of the present article analyses the influence Pater's works on Rossetti. The dialog of writers is researched in the context of evolution of English essay about art. J.Ruskin was one of important figures in this genre. Speaking about Florentine painting of the verge of the XV-XVI centuries, the author of the present article bases the arguments on the fact that this painting affected crisis consciousness in Europe culture of the verge of the XIX-XX centuries.
