This publication presents the results of a segment study - Small Science Service Companies (SSSC). The study was carried out within the framework of a grant from the European Union (# R076 CAROTS of Interreg Baltic Sea Region, 2019-2021), aimed at the study and development of micro and small private scientific laboratories. As part of the analysis of the global institutional transformation of the R&D sector, the classification of segments and the corresponding focuses of economic research are presented. Structural analysis of the pan-European sample showed the consistency of the thesis about the correctness of distinguishing two segments of the R&D sector by dimension: micro and small (MSE); medium and large (MLE). The presented economic characteristics of the national SSSC segment substantiate its situational organizational design in the national innovation system and the investment attractiveness of the business model of private small scientific service companies.
