Screen versions of "The picture of Dorian Gray": intercultural interpretations

Three screen versions of O.Wilde's novel present a great variety of interpretation due to both their intercultural nature and the novel's character. The American version (1945) puts forward the problem of responsibility for one's moral choice irrespective of any external influence. In the German film (1970) the story looks more realistic and socially critical describing losing one's soul metaphorically. While the French interpretation (1977) goes deeper and with more elaborate narrative techniques reveals philosophical ambiguity of the novel from the XX century perspective.
