The article highlights the challenges faced by French companies operating in Russia following the onset of the conflict with Ukraine in 2022. Companies such as Auchan, Leroy Merlin, Renault, and Total Energies faced with the choice of either leaving the Russian market or continuing their operations despite sanctions and public pressure. Auchan and Leroy Merlin justified their presence by citing concerns over jobs and the supply of essential goods but faced criticism for potentially aiding Russian military efforts. Renault sold its assets but retained the option to buy them back, while TotalEnergies, despite supporting sanctions, continues to participate in Russian energy projects. The article underscores the complexity of decision-making in a conflict between economic interests and ethical standards.
