The article is devoted to the problem of finding ethical maxims when choosing the scientific methodology of modern legal research. As a normative basis, the author chose the 2002 Code of Ethics for Scientists and Engineers for analysis, as well as the draft and concept of the 2012 Code of Professional Ethics of the Educational Community and the Model Code of Professional Ethics of Teachers of Organizations Carrying Out Educational Activities in 2014. The result of the study is the distinction between permitted (legal) and «speculative» methods of scientific research and justification of the inadmissibility the latter, including when choosing a scientific methodology.
