Ethnocultural dialogue in the urban space of Derbent

The article presents an analysis of the ethnocultural space of the city of Derbent in the XIX century. The primary cultural methodological approaches employed in this study include the historical-cultural method, which involves the examination and analysis of culture in the context of historical development, taking into account various historical factors and processes; the comparative method, which facilitates a comparative analysis of the cultures of different peoples and epochs to identify both commonalities and distinctive characteristics; and the sociological method, which explores culture within its social context, encompassing social norms, values, structures, and relationships. This article aims to identify the factors influencing interethnic dialogue in a multiethnic environment as a component of urban integrity. Data regarding the ethnic and confessional composition of Derbent in the XIX century is provided, serving as a foundation for characterizing the city’s ethnocultural space. The synthesis of the ethnic cultural systems of the city is examined through the process of interaction among various cultural elements, resulting from contact and exchange between different ethnic groups. Distinctive features of the polyethnic culture of the city are highlighted, including the diversity of languages and dialects, the variety of religious practices, traditional customs and celebrations, and a common cultural heritage. Factors influencing the dialogue process are identified, such as modes of communication, cultural events, daily activities, and significant locations for the urban populace.
