The article examines the transformation of family relations in Russian society in the context of the state-political factor's impact on them. The aim of the study is to show the interdependence of the processes of egalitarianisation of family relations with the state's family and demographic policy in historical retrospect and in the current period. The object is an egalitarian model of family life with its inherent values of gender equality, justice, free will and mutual respect. The aim is to discover the origins of the destruction of the traditional family way of life towards its egalitarisation; to review and assess the political and legislative measures taken in relation to the family by the Soviet state; to determine the development vector of modern Russian policy on family regulation in the solutions it proclaims; and to present the polarity of researchers' views on the issue. The scientific novelty lies in the identification of the incoherence between the main directions of family and demographic policy and the actual existing socio-cultural practices of family life, which are now becoming increasingly egalitarian in nature.
