It is impossible to imagine any large modern production without a functioning quality management system and certification of compliance with the QMS according to the ISO 9001 standard, which are integral components of the successful functioning of the company. However, quality management hasn`t always been given great importance, especially at the beginning of the emergence of the market of goods and services. The article considers the stages that the evolution of the quality management system has passed over several centuries. The author reflects the stages of its formation and development: from quality control in the craft shop of the XIX century to the modern quality management system. The article describes the ideas of scientists who have made a significant contribution to the development of the QMS at each stage. The authors also pay attention to modern trends in the development of the quality management system.
