Esotericism in cross-border culture (problem statement)

The paper presents a sociocultural analysis of the religious life of the Russian Far East with an emphasis on esoteric practices. These practices contrast spiritual improvement with the path of mental self-improvement through penance and humility. Based on various research approaches, the author considers the axiological bases of the interest of the Far Eastern borderland residents in esoteric culture. The paper substantiates the fact that, historically, esotericism has included different concepts and practices. The study reveals the specific nature of the religiosity in the Far Eastern region and defines the role of Chinese syncretic religions professed by the Manchus. The author concludes that due to the lack of strong religious traditions, in particular Orthodox Christian ones, and several aspects of the cultural and historical development of the Far East, the path of mental self-improvement is the most attractive strategy of religious life where personal success, prosperity, and well-being in all spheres become the main values.
