To the characterization of the philosophy of education of S. P. Shevyrev

This article is devoted to the key religious and philosophical aspects of the pedagogical heritage of the outstanding Russian thinker, philologist, professor of the Department of Pedagogy of the Moscow University Stepan Petrovich Shevyrev (1806-1864). Te main stages of the pedagogical activity of the scientist are considered, during which his interests in this field were formed and his educational ideal was formed too. In his pedagogical theory S. P. Shevyrev atempted to implement the instractive and educational model formulated by Count S. S. Uvarov in the pages of the Journal of the Ministry of National Education and consisted of a combination of European education and Russian principles. Acting as one of his main conductors in the system of Russian education, Shevyrev sought to reveal the “ideal image” of “Russian Upbringing”, which is based on the unity of the family, the state and the Church. In the center of his atention is the connection between the family and the Church, which makes the family as the whole being, the source of Christian freedom. Te Old Russian ideal of education is opposed by the thinker to Western European humanistic and educational pedagogical theories, which absolutizes the freedom of the human mind
