Toward an interpretation of the character of Faust in the context of western European and Russian culture

The article discusses the character of Faust as he appears in the poetic tragedy of Johann von Goethe and in Alexander Pushkin’s “Scene from Faust”. A side-by-side analysis attempts to see in Pushkin’s text not only the result of immediate artistic impression but also a spiritual interpretation of the tragedy, which became the life’s work of von Goethe and had a profound influence on all of European literature.
