The paper presents an annotated picture of the history of collecting, recording, publication and study of the pearl of Kazakh folklore - romantic epos "Kozy Korpesh and Bayan Sulu". The first informative materials about the epic, brief notes on the text in the original language, translations and retellings of the epic content to the Russian date back to the twenties, thirties of the XIX century. In other words, the bibliography of works devoted to this topic is quite extensive and requires systematization, to a certain extent, critical reflection, taking into account new and the latest folklore studies and newly discovered materials. The work represents the first experience of systematization of materials for the collection, recording, publication and study of the epic. Identified, Chokan and Genghis Valihanovs played an important role in preserving for posterity the earliest variants: they undertook in 1841 the first record full, artistically brilliant and original text of the epic. I.N. Berezin, V.V. Radlov, I.N. Ilmenskogo, N.G. Potanin, N.N. Puntusova etc. for the collection, publication and study of the epics testify to the ongoing interest of Russian scientists to the epic in the XIX century. Identified primary objectives for the study of the epic: it is necessary a comprehensive and systematic study of narrative, historical-architectural, that is the totality of objects and facts of tangible and intangible culture related to the epic "Kozy Korpesh and Bayan Sulu". Due attention should be paid to local place names, legends and traditions about the plots, hills, mountains, lakes and rivers whose names are associated with the content and plot of the epic monument, and the archaic layers of it.
