The article deals with analysis of authorial declaration in Volynian Monomakhovich’s Chronicle included in Hypatian codex (which is traditionally known as «Galician Volynian chronicle»). In this passage different calendar epochs (Julian Calendar, Greek Olympiad System, Antiochian era) are recapitulated and Eusebius of Caesarea (Eusebius Pamphili) is mentioned. Interpretation of the fragment was difficult for the scholars for a great while. Academician Orlov, who attempted to identify some sources of «chronographic» quotations in Hypatian chronicle, considered chronicler’s knowledge about the name of Eusebius Pamphili and systems of chronology to relate with John Malalas’ Chronographia. Through analysis of references to Eusebius in the Slavonic text of Chronographia is argued that it could not serve as only source of knowledge about Eusebius’ work to the medieval Russian writer. John Malalas attributed to Eusebius traditional theological method of chronology only, comprising in parallels of six days of Creation to the six millenaries of human history before Christ. In the article interpretation of author’s appeal to authority of Eusebius is proposed in terms of literary history. This appeal is closely related to author’s comprehension of genre specificity of the created historical narration. The author, who used both scribed sources (chronicles with typical annual composition) and oral reminiscences of Volynian prince Vladimir Vasilkovich, consciously chose for his work genre form of «history». Appeal to the classical heritage for both Western, and Slavic literature is considered as evidence of unity of medieval historiographical tradition.
