Relevance. The article considers the urgent problem of the lack of uniform approaches to assessing the level of physical fitness of students in the general education system. Despite the fact that physical education is one of the compulsory subjects, modern educational programs lack clear standards and scales for assessing physical fitness, which complicates the objective assessment of student results. The purpose of the study is to establish the features of assessing the physical fitness of students in general education organizations by physical education specialists. Research methods: analysis of scientific literature, questionnaires, pedagogical testing, methods of mathematical statistics. Research results. The conducted analysis of scientific literature, as well as a questionnaire of 70 physical education teachers of the Krasnodar Territory, made it possible to identify four main positions of specialists on this issue: individual compilation of assessment scales by teachers, the use of the sigma method, a focus on the standards of the All-Russian Physical Culture and Sports Complex GTO and a complete rejection of assessing physical fitness indicators. The authors critically evaluate each of the positions, pointing out their advantages and disadvantages, and emphasize the need to develop scientifically sound, realistic and applicable in practice criteria and scales for assessing the physical fitness of schoolchildren. Conclusion. The most promising approach is based on the use of the standards of the All-Russian Physical Culture and Sports Complex GTO, adapted to the age characteristics of students. The development of such standards and assessment scales should become a priority in the field of physical education in comprehensive schools.
