The article deals with one of the crucial problems of the theory and practice of poetic translation: how to render the specific rhythm of a poetic original in its translation. The author regards rhythm as one of the parameters, that determine the specificity of the poetic text as a type and the paradox of poetic translation: its impossibility and existence. Rhythm is considered to be not only a formal characteristic of poetry but it characterizes poetic thought as well. As far as rhythm is included in the poetic thought derivation and objectification, its principle should be rendered in the translation. The author of the article analyzes how J.Brodsky renders rhythm of his poems into English.
