On the question of framing reality in art photography

The question of the relationship between the figure and the background framing reality is also such an important problem of visual perception that, in addition to the ambivalence of the concept of “background,” the image itself is both a plane and a space. Considering the relation of the figure with the background on to which it is projected, we immediately note that one of the most important functions of the background is its ability to move away, fade, and go into shadow in order to advantageously shade the figure. To do this, the background should not draw attention to itself, should not dispute the leading meaning of the figure in the foreground.
