The aim of the study is to determine the role of Ivan Yakovlevich Slovtsov in the development of natural sciences in the Tobolsk Province in the second half of the 19th - early 20th centuries. In the course of the study, a cultural-personal approach was used. The research methodology was based on both historical and general scientific methods, as well as the principles of historicism, scientific objectivity and consistency. Based on archival materials and scientific works of I.Ya. Slovtsov, the authors identified 3 main stages during which the formation and development of a scientist-researcher of the history and nature of Siberia took place. The first stage is studying at Kazan University and working as a teacher at the Omsk Military Gymnasium, the second one is cooperation with the West Siberian Branch of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society (ZSO IR-GO), which contributed to the search and accumulation of scientific data and materials, the third stage is the systematization, analysis and preservation of the collected finds, organization of a museum at the Alexander real school in Tyumen, publication and educational activities. The paper analyzes the main scientific monographs of Ivan Yakovlevich, notes their complexity and consistency. The authors emphasize that the exhibits of the museum, collected by the scientist and contributing to the emergence of the foundations of paleontology, zoology, botany, veterinary medicine, zootechnics and scientific anatomy of farm animals in the Tobolsk Province, are of particular value not only for contemporaries, but also for future generations. In conclusion, it was concluded that the role of I.Ya. Slovtsov in the development of a number of areas of natural sciences is quite significant, as it served as the basis for further research in the region in the 20th century.
