To the question of understanding a foreign language text by university students

The article considers the main characteristics of the process of text perception and text understanding. Understanding is interpreted as a mediated analytical process, based on the intellectual work of splitting the text into semantic segments and further combining these contextual units into a common meaning. A special role is given to grammar skills, considered to be an integral component of language competence.
