The author shows the relevance of teaching discourse related courses in higher education within the modern languages curriculum. Discourse competence is the basic component of the communicative competence, which is essential for a professional practice, especially involving human interaction. The structuring and understanding discourse is an integral part of the discourse competence and is the core of the modern languages curriculum
