Recently, researchers have again acquired great interest in Gnostic studies. Scientists are particularly interested in the question of the time and place of the origin of Gnosticism. Formally, the beginning of our era, the 2nd - 3rd century AD, is considered to be the time of the appearance of gnosis. However, detailed studies of this issue lead philosophers and theologians to the conclusion that Gnosis as a phenomenon arose much earlier. Its origins are seen both in the ancient oriental teachings, and in Hellenic philosophy and in Judaism. The Church historian, Professor M. E. Posnov, and the German-American philosopher Hans Jonas, who most thoroughly investigated this question, bring the roots of origin of Gnosticism “to the time of Adam”. The author agrees with a similar version of the emergence of Gnosticism. The article concludes that Gnosis is a constant companion of Christianity, claiming today the title of a full-fledged independent religion.
