Theodore Metochites is an outstanding figure of Palaiologan Renaissance. The article is intended to discuss his ideas of Fortune and Divine Providence. Special attention is drawn to the problem of the relations between these categories in his world outlook. Besides it, the question of his ideas' sources is taken up. The comparison between Metochites' thoughts and those of his nearest predecessors and contemporaries helps to reveal some new features of his position which are out of the common for the traditional byzantine conception, though in general Metochites' ideas are the product of it.
