On the Issue of Classification of Subjects Russian Federation

Тhe article considers the essence of the classification (сlassification) process, the advantages and disadvantages of various types of regional typologies, which are generally divided into theoretical and applied. The regional environment factors and indicators that are the basis of ratings used to generate various typologies are analyzed. The article analyzes the most significant the Russian regional rating systems that provide an integral assessment of the development for each subject in the Russian Federation and are used for ranking regions. It is noted the feasibility to create a unified, dynamically updated model of the typology of subjects of the Federation to be used as the baseline analysis stage in the process of updating the national regional policy. The model will be applicable for regional development strategies while solving the systemic issues of differentiation of socio-economic development of constituent entities in the Russian Federation.
