On the question of the evolution of “tourist” and “tourism” concepts

Tourism’s transformation into an independent branch of the economy at the international level has necessitated the study of various aspects of its evolution in historical retrospect. In the history of domestic tourism, a noticeable activation occurred at the turn of the XX-XXI centuries, giving new impulses to development and providing new opportunities for evolution on an international scale. The aim of the present work is to investigate the emergence of the basic for this industry terms “tourist” and “tourism”, their introduction into wide circulation and their consolidation in the scientific literature. The article presents the results of the identified circumstances of generation of the above terms and considers the historical stages of their transformation. The following methods were used in the research: historical-genetic, which allowed to trace the evolution of the concepts of “tourist” and “tourism”, as well as to establish the changes that appeared in their content in different historical periods; retrospective, using which on the basis of the identified disparate materials it was possible to restore the sequence of changes in the interpretation of these terms; the method of historical informatics, which made it possible to use modern technologies to carry out an extended search of the necessary sources; meta-analytical method, which made it possible to use modern technologies to carry out an extended search of the necessary sources. Сonclusions have been drawn about their introduction into circulation.
