On the issue of organizing the studies of the earthquakes on April 20, 1966 and May 14, 1970 in the Dagestan ASSR

The tragic events in Turkey and Syria associated with the earthquake of February 6, 2023, force us again to review similar facts from the past and study intently the experience of eliminating the consequences of natural disasters that occurred on April 20, 1966 and May 14, 1970 in one of the earthquake-prone regions of Russia - Dagestan ASSR. The purpose of this article is to trace the process of organizing the study of earthquakes in the Republic of Dagestan and attracting specialists from the leading scientific institutions of the country to scientific research, as well as to examine the history of the Dagestan seismic station system and the establishment of the republican school of seismologists. The article analyses a series of specific legislative acts aimed at improving the quality of construction in seismically hazardous areas.
