The «Personal Shortage» in the Healthcare Sector in the Middle Volga Region in the 1920s and 1930s: Problems and Solutions

The article refl ects the activities of local authorities in the Middle Volga region to provide the region with medical personnel and overcome their shortage. The author examines the main reasons of the «personnel shortage» in the healthcare sector in the 1920s and 1930s in the Middle Volga Region, as well as the problems faced by medical personnel in the course of their professional activities in everyday life, which were associated with the temporary work schedule of medical students and their involvement in various non-core jobs. A signifi cant gap in medical care between urban and rural areas has been identifi ed. On the base of archival materials and published sources the author presents the general results of measures taken to overcome the personnel problem in providing medical care to residents of the Middle Volga Region in the 1920s and 1930s.
