Culture has a huge impact on personality and determines not only what language people speak, what behavioral strategies they choose, but can even influence their gaming preferences. This study is the author's graduate MA thesis at Pace University, New York, and was conducted online. Sixty-two participants from seven countries participated online. The author examined how cultural background relates to differences in individual gaming preferences and how culture influences intrinsic motivation. These attributes were assessed using measures of cultural orientation (IND-COL) and intrinsic motivation inventory (IMI). We hypothesized that the Eastern and Western cultures would prefer different gaming platforms, and, also, that the intrinsic motivations for playing games would differ between cultures. Results demonstrated that culture influences gaming preferences, but that intrinsic motivations of relatedness, enjoyment, and values did not different significantly between cultures. Further investigation into how the influence of values and skill acquisition may allow for more effective gaming development is needed, to better understand how perceived game utility changes between cultures.
