The reviewed book by Anna Eremeeva is a pioneering study about the life of Russian scientists in Russia's regions during the Civil War. The book considers the survival strategies of provincial intelligentsia under the extreme socio-economic and political conditions in 1917-1922, focusing on their scientific, educational and, to a lesser extent, political activities. The author analyses the influence of intellectual migration on the scientific life and development of higher education in non-Soviet Russia, and also examines the interaction of the capital and provincial scientific intelligentsia. The analysis is anchored in a wide range of original sources, including documents from archives in Russia, Ukraine, and the United States, as well as media and scientific publications of the years of the Revolution and Civil War. The extensive use of such primary sources as letters, diaries, and memories allows elucidating the scientists' perceptions and interpretations of the events.
