Cartographic method in the history of culture of a region

The possibility and necessity for studying the development of culture of the region with application of cartographic method are analysed in the article. Some examples of using maps in publications dated by XIX—XX centuries are presented. The author's cartographic interpretation of the results of population census of 1897 relatively one of cultural phenomenon — education, is represented.
