In modern Russian legislation, the term “goods” is often found and traditionally used along with related legal constructions “products”, “property”, “thing”, “work”, “service”, “objects of civil and property rights”, “objects of trade” etc. Similarly, the term is used in foreign and international law. Despite its frequent use, this category does not have a single agreed-upon common, legal, or doctrinal content. There is a “own” understanding of this term in foreign, international public and private law, in Russian civil, tax, antimonopoly, customs legislation, etc. This paper provides a brief overview of the existing normative and doctrinal diversity, sets out the author's ideas about the legally significant content of the category “goods” and attempts to determine its place in the system of norms of modern trade (commercial) law.
